Inspiration in the Form of a Five-Year-Old.
A Personal Note
Inspired
by my niece Hannah, who was diagnosed at age 5 with cystic fibrosis, I decided
to use my company, The Chocolate Garden, to help fight this fatal, genetic
disease. I just couldn’t look at her innocent, freckled face and bright blue
eyes and not do everything in my power to make sure she had every chance for a
long and happy life. It seemed so unfair that this would happen to such a tiny,
defenseless person who hadn’t even begun to live. Who would she be when she grew
up? What would she accomplish? Would she and her sister, Olivia want to be
part of The Chocolate Garden some day? It’s terrifying to realize you might not
find out. Maybe it’s a coping strategy, but I decided immediately that I’d
rather put my energy into working toward a cure than dwelling on the incredible
fear that comes with a fatal diagnosis. And the good news is, this is a disease
that we can do something about. Incredible progress has already been made in the
fight against CF and for every year of research, another year of life
expectancy has been gained. That’s a staggering, remarkable fact to me and
it means that my efforts will have an effect. And so will yours.
So
far, we’ve raised over $100,000 primarily through an event we called The 65 Roses Garden Party. The event
was first held in 2002 with the modest goal of raising $10,000. It raised
$11,250 in its first year. The second year, the goal was doubled and again
exceeded! The final tally was $22,044.50. In 2004 & 2005, we again
exceeded our previous totals, raising over $23,800 and $24,000, respectively. In
2006, we had our best year, raising $26,550. Thanks to all who
participated.
Having met our goal of $100,000, we are introducing a new way to raise funds:
the Wine & Roses Assortment! For every box sold, we will donate
$10.00 to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
You can rest assured that every dollar will make a difference. Again (I
can’
t say this enough) for every year of research, a year of life expectancy has
been gained! Because of this incredible progress and the treatments developed in
the last few years, Hannah is an active, precocious, creative, smart, busy, happy,
athletic
12-year-old with a full life and a bright future.
I thank you from the bottom of my heart,
